After I got out of that second torture session with Vlad, endorphins raging, I floated out to Martha’s desk.

“How was it today?” she asked as she handed me a cup of water.

“As painful as always,” I said. “That man’s a maniac.”

“He’s our secret weapon. He knows how to get the job done but doesn’t take prisoners,” she said with a sly smile.

The light was perfect. Her hair was thick and beautiful. That low-cut red blouse. What a gorgeous woman. In my blissed-out state of mind, I started to think, I could love this woman. After all the dating mishaps I had been through, after all the weirdness and disappointments, this was the way my mind still worked.

I could love this woman.

It was just ridiculous. I didn’t even know her.

But Vlad knew her. Vlad vouched for her.

I was simply not ready nor thinking clearly enough to do anything about it, so I made another appointment and floated out of the office. Then I called Justin.

“Dude! She asked the Impaler about you. They talked about you. She wants to go out with you. This is perfect!”

He seemed overly enthusiastic. “Dude, you’re getting way ahead of yourself. I’m not convinced they were talking about me. Don’t you think she gets hit on in that office like all the time?”

“Yeah, but she turns them down, because she’s been waiting for someone, someone very special, someone worthy of her love and affection—and that someone is you! You need to call her up and say you want to schedule another appointment or reschedule the one you have. When that’s done, you say you need to schedule a coffee date for the two of you. Tomorrow—it must happen tomorrow.”

“But what if she’s seeing someone that Vlad doesn’t even know about?”

“Then ask her if she’s seeing somebody. If she says no—and she will—ask her if she wants to see somebody, that somebody being you. Or, you can simply say, ‘What’s your favorite ice cream? We should go get some.’”

I made the call. At first, she seemed a little resistant to my invitation to meet for a coffee.

“Is there an office policy against dating patients?” I asked.

“No, there’s no policy,” she said. Then she said the best time for her to get together was after work over dinner, and she suggested we meet at a restaurant that was located close to her office. It was a very hip, upscale place that boasted a “seasonal kitchen,” which is a euphemism for “expensive dining.” It was one of those places with high prices and microscopic portions, but I loved the ambiance.

Soft lighting, nice décor. Martha in another low-cut blouse.

After we ordered I asked about her background, and she told me of her Catholic school upbringing but said she wasn’t devout and would probably burn in hell for her sins. She told me about her careers in modeling and stunt driving, both cut short by her mother, who convinced her that neither was a real job. She told me about her years
